Lamar University is home to over 15,000 students and among the fastest-growing higher-learning institutions in Texas. A member of the Texas State University system, LU offers more than 100 programs of study culminating in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Its 292-acre campus is located about 90 miles east of Houston and 25 miles west of Louisiana.
To create a unique look for its new lecture hall, Lamar University contracted local installer Floor-Tex Commercial Flooring, who installed flocked carpet in the seating area and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) on the landings and lecture floor.
In highlighting the walkways between rows, the university wanted to be able to mix insert colors and incorporate a glow-in-the-dark element for when the lights are low or out. The brief also required that stair nosing blend with the surrounding carpet and tile while still clearly highlighting the stair edge.
Research led them to Tredsafe, a manufacturer whose specialized nosing for carpeted stairs would last the entire life cycle of the lecture hall. They selected UP121, rigid PVC in black with safety blue and a glow insert combination.
“The fine folks from Tredsafe provided excellent service and a quality product on time and on budget,” says Everett Shumaker, VP of sales and marketing at Floor-Tex. “The material was easy to work with and installed very easily. This Tredsafe product separated the university’s [installation] from others by being a safe, durable tread that will last.” As a result of this project, “Lamar has decided to make Tredsafe standard at their facility.”
