What is LRV (Light Reflectance Value)?

Light Reflectance Value (LRV) measures how much visible light a surface reflects on a scale from 0 to 100.

  • 0 = absorbs all light (black)
  • 100 = reflects all light (white)

In simple terms, LRV tells you how light or dark a surface appears.

Why LRV matters

LRV is widely used in building design to improve visibility, accessibility, and safety.

  • Helps people clearly distinguish between surfaces
  • Critical for visually impaired users navigating spaces
  • Improves overall wayfinding and safety in low-light conditions

LRV and stair safety

On stairs, visibility is essential. Poor contrast makes it harder to see step edges, increasing the risk of trips and falls.

  • Stair nosings should clearly contrast with the step
  • This contrast is measured using LRV difference

Recommended contrast

As indicated by AS1428.1 – 30% contrast is required, and is Tredsafe’s recommendation for adequate contrast.
